Former UK Tolled Crossings
Abolition of tolled crossings
A recent comment on one of our Social Media outlets when highlighting the centenary of tolls being lifted on Stonehouse Bridge was “so it can be done?”.
Well, yes it definitely can be done! In fact our research on this has identified that Tolls have been abolished on 120 Bridges that provide river or harbour crossings. Also 3 ferry crossings. If you know of any others, please tell us!
Where and When?
To date there have been:
- 7 Tolls abolished in the 21st Century
- 48 Tolls abolished in the 20th Century
- 57 Tolls abolished in the 19th Century
- 4 Tolls abolished in the 18th Century (or prior)
- 4 Tolls with date unconfirmed, likely 19th Century
- 3 Abolished tolls in Plymouth, Laira Bridge, Stonehouse Bridge & Embankment Road
- 2 Toll Bridges abolished in SE Cornwall (Callington Turnpike, Gunnislake & Callington New Bridge)
- 3 x Ferry tolls (red text)
